ANCIENT ROMES SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES
There were many different types of entertainment throughout the world but Rome in particular had many sports and activities. There was wrestling and boxing which was a very popular sport that was usually practiced in a grass field. And because there was no such thing as boxing gloves athletes tightly wrapped their hands in thick layers of cloth. The fight was not controlled by any rules so biting and scratching were all allowed. The only rule that their was that they weren't allowed to use any feet to kick or trip the other opponents. So in the roman time wrestling and boxing would be very violent because the two opponents would fight each other till death.

Swimming was another favourite sport for the Romans for its fun for swimming and challenging races. Swimming was part of the education for young aged boys,and it was mostly practiced in the Tiber river,however swimming didn't become popular till the 18 century. By 1837,six indoor pools with diving boards were built. After the modern Olympic Games began in 1896,the popularity of swimming pools began to spread. Soon the Romans started to build bathing pools separated from the swimming pools. The bathing pools were held for social gatherings not just to get clean. Bathers held onto their valuable belongings so that they wouldn't get stolen. But some bathers did lose some of their valuable things like bracelets, hair pins, beads and gems
Romans also participated in a wide variety of ball games including hand ball, soccer, field hockey, catch games and even dodge ball. Physical fitness and athletic ability in the Roman men played an important part of their culture. At home men played ball before dinner, which were games of throwing and catching. A popular game was to through a ball as high as they could, and than catch it before it hit the ground. And woman did not participate in these games.
Running was another favourite sport and activity in Ancient Rome, boys competed in foot races against one another, and this provided a location for this activity. The race began with a trumpet blow and off the runners went and at the end to decide a winner they were to make sure no one had cheated. But if it was a tie the two would run on a packed earth track.
Roman archery was the practice of using a bow that was drawn by hand and held, that was free of any mechanical device, to shoot arrows. Archery was used in hunting and had become a precious sport to the Romans. A person practicing archery was called an archer or a bowman and the experts of archery were sometimes called a taxophite. And archery was a common practice with the military.
